What is the Google Sandbox?

Before we get too far into an explanation as to what Google's sandbox is, it must be noted that not everyone even agrees that the sandbox exists. The sandbox is actually nothing more than a theory developed to explain what many different SEO experts have witnessed with their listings. Whether or not the sandbox really exists is actually irrelevant when we know that the EFFECTS of the sandbox exist. Google's Sandbox is a relatively new FILTER that appeared to be put in place back in March of 2004. This happened after the widely publicized updates of Austin and Florida, and the implementation of what is known as the Austin update.

If you are not sure what those are, there is no need to worry as those updates are now for the most part in the past. The sandbox filter seems to affect nearly all new websites placing them on an initial "probation" status. The effect of this is that new websites may get into Google's SERP's (Search Engine Results Pages) relatively quickly and may even perform well for a couple of weeks. When the filter is applied to the new website it is referred to as being put in the "sandbox". The new website will still show in the result pages, but it will not rank well regardless of how much original, well optimized content and regardless of how many quality
inbound links the site may have. The filter restrains new websites from having immediate success in the search engine result pages.

The sandbox filter seems to affect almost all new websites, with very few exceptions. It is important to note that the filter is not a punishment for anything the webmaster did with their new website. The filter is merely an initiation period for new websites.
The sandbox filter also affects more competitive keyword driven sites more than sites that key in on less competitive keywords. If your website focuses on very competitive keywords, you are likely to remain in the sandbox for a longer period of time than if you focus on keywords that are relatively non-competitive keywords.

The Google Sandbox is a filter that was put in place in about March of 2004. New websites with new domain names can take 6 to 12 months to get decent rankings on Google. Some are reporting stays of up to 18 months. The Sandbox seems to affect nearly all new websites placing them on probation. Similarly, websites that have made comprehensive redesigns have been caught up in this Sandbox. The more competitive the keywords used, the stronger and longer the website's stay in the Sandbox. If your website focuses on very competitive keywords, you are likely to remain in the Sandbox for a longer period of time than if you use on keywords that are relatively low traffic. It doesn't seem to matter how much original, well optimized content and regardless of how many quality inbound links the site may have.
You guessed it... What is the Google Sandbox Theory and how do I escape it? When you finish reading this , you'll be an expert on the good 'ole Google Sandbox Theory and you'll know how to combat its effects. So, pay close attention. This is some very important stuff.

There are several theories that attempt explain the Google Sandbox effect. Essentially, the problem is simple. Webmasters around the world began to notice that their new websites, optimized and chock full of inbound links, were not ranking well for their selected keywords.

Possible explanations for the Google Sandbox effect :

A common explanation offered for the Google Sandbox effect is the Time Delay factor.
Essentially, this theory suggests that Google releases websites from the Sandbox after a set period of time. Since many webmasters started feeling the effects of the Sandbox around March-April 2004 and a lot of those websites were released in the Allegra update, this website aging theory has gained a lot of ground.

How to find out if your website is Sandboxed :

Finding out if your website is Sandboxed is quite simple. If your website does not appear in any SERPS for your target list of keywords, or if your results are highly depressing (ranked somewhere on the 40th page) even if you have lots of inbound links and almost-perfect on-page optimization, then your website has been Sandboxed.

How To Escape from the Google Sandbox :

Now, from our discussion about the Sandbox theory above, you know that at best, the Google Sandbox is a filter on the search engine's algorithm that has a dampening influence on websites. While most SEO experts will tell you that this effect decreases after a certain period of time, they mistakenly accord it to website aging, or basically, when the website is first spidered by Googlebot. Actually, the Sandbox does holds back new websites but more importantly, the effects reduce over time not on the basis of website aging, but on link aging.

This means that the time that you spend in the Google Sandbox is directly linked to when you start acquiring quality links for your website. Thus, if you do nothing, your website may not be released from the Google Sandbox. For the uninitiated, back in January-February 2005, search engine Google updated their algorithm, what is called the "Bourbon" update, and in the process decided to penalize new websites by not awarding them the rankings that a web that has been online for a while deserves based on the merits of optimization.

This is widely referred to as the :

Google Sandbox-- Google Aging Delay-- Google Content Filter.

Generally about 10% of the volume of searches each month. In this case, about 1,200 in a 30-day period. Five Things Most Search Engine Optimization Firms Won’t Tell You -- But That You Need To Know Before You Spend A Dime So, you want your Web site to rank high on Google and other search engines.

To do that, you're planning on hiring a search engine optimization (SEO) firm. Good move -- maybe. A good SEO firm can help make your rankings and sales skyrocket. That's the good news. The bad news is there are a lot of SEO firms out there that will charge you big bucks without delivering results. As someone in the SEO business myself, I've heard countless horror stories about people who have gotten ripped off by paying for services they didn't need, or simply not understanding what their SEO firm is supposed to be doing on their behalf.
Below are some of the things most SEO firms will never tell you. Knowing these insider secrets can save you thousands of dollars and many hours of frustration.

1. Most SEO work follows the 80/20 rule.
In other words, 20% of the work will account for 80% of the results. If that's true (and believe me, from personal experience I know that it is), you should make sure that the fee structure reflects this. Ask for an itemized quote, so you can make sure that you aren't paying too much for the other 80%. For example, a lot of SEO experts will tell you they're going to spend X number of hours tweaking your site's keywords and meta tags, but there's really no hard evidence that those techniques have a significant impact on your rankings. Doing simple things like making sure your page structure is "search engine friendly" (ensuring all your pages can be indexed by search engines) is infinitely more important. As part of a comprehensive SEO strategy, you still want to do the other 80%, but you want to make sure that the bulk of the priority (and cost) is focused the effort that will produce the most results.

2. You can receive a guarantee.
Most big SEO firms say to watch out for anyone who guarantees results. They'll tell you most places that do so are nothing but scam artists. Here's the truth: I can absolutely guarantee any business I can get you ranked in the top 10 on Google for any keyword you choose. It all depends on how much money you're willing to spend and how long you're willing to wait for the results. If an SEO firm is confident in their ability to improve your rankings, why wouldn't they offer you a guarantee?

3. You can see immediate results.
Most SEO firms will try to tell you it takes months to see tangible results. Wrong. In fact, it's often possible to see results within a week, depending on the keywords you're targeting. I know because I've accomplished this for my clients time and time again. Unless you're going after extremely competitive keywords, if the SEO firm bidding for your business says it will take three months to accomplish anything, they're probably just looking to sign you up for a lucrative long-term retainer.

4. SEO work is not too complicated to explain in detail.
Too many SEO experts will balk if you ask them to explain in detail the work they're going to do for you. But don't let them off the hook. While some strategies may indeed be technical, most of the techniques are easily explained -- especially some of the most important ones (see point #1 above about the 80/20 rule). 5. The greatest factor in SEO has nothing to do with your web site.
In my research, I've found that around 80% of the Google ranking factors have nothing to do with the web site itself. The real determining factors are links to your site from other web sites. As long as your site is easily crawled by Google, most of the energy should be focused on getting these outside links. If an SEO firm tries to sell you an expensive package to simply "optimize" your site for Google, it's probably going to cost you a lot of money for very little result.
